IMO International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code

These codes describe the equipment intended for carrying particular dangerous goods by sea.

Main equipment codes

IMO 1 — tank containers for dangerous goods

These containers are intended for carrying:

  • Liquids with a flash point below 0 °C
  • Certain highly hazardous toxic or corrosive substances
  • Flammable materials (self-igniting)
  • Goods dangerous when wet
  • Oxidising substances
  • Liquids whose working pressure does not exceed the maximum allowable working pressure of the shell

Note: aggressive or unstable cargo may require special vessels. An IMO 1 container may be fitted with top and bottom discharge.

IMO 2 — tank containers for non-hazardous goods

These containers are intended for carrying:

  • Liquids with a flash point between 0 °C and 61 °C, without a subsidiary hazard
  • Certain low-hazard toxic and corrosive substances

These containers are intended for carrying:

  • Gases liquefied under pressure.

IMO 0 — tank containers for food-grade cargo

These containers are intended for carrying:
